How is it mid-February already? It feels like you blink and a month passes.
Lets kick off with all the fantastic things that WLBC Ranger Service and Team Tawd have been up to since the start of the new year. First up, they all kicked off their first session of the year with an impressive display of teamwork. Starting at The Beacon, they loaded gravel into a trailer, which is no easy task, then headed down to the valley with their load. There, they repaired the pathway leading to the community orchard which had been badly damaged by recent severe rainstorms. In addition to restoring the pathway, they took proactive measures to prevent future damage by digging trenches alongside the pathway which should redirect rainwater away from the path.

Towards the end of January, Ranger Ben and Aubrey the dog led Team Tawd to firstly cut and remove two fallen trees from the footpath adjacent to Summer Street bridge, followed by footpath clearance at the back of the library, cutting back bramble and weeds up to the new bridge.

As we entered February, they replaced some broken bollards. It was quite the task to get the bases of the old ones out but they got there in the end. There was also a bit of litter picking, drain clearing and patch scraping done.

Last but not least, Team Tawd and Rangers Ben and Aubrey have been cleaning up the River Tawd near Skem Beach. They pulled out trolleys, wheelie bins amongst other stuff, which was then all taken up to the rangers depot to await recycling. I think we can all agree that the group have done fantastic work up until now and we really appreciate all the things they are doing in Tawd Valley Park.

Next up, take a look at this splendid piece of artwork created by “The Mural Lisa” she did as part of her Community and Charities Project. The artwork depicts a kingfisher and dragonfly, two animals that can be seen down in the valley. Would you like to see it? The artwork can be found at the Friends of Tawd Valley Classroom. You’re more than welcome to come take a look.
Here’s what Lisa had to say “Bringing the beauty of nature to life with this stunning Kingfisher and Dragonfly mural for Friends of Tawd Valley. This project was brought me so much joy despite the challenges of tricky surfaces and unpredictable weather from wind, rain to rainbows. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing it all come together!”
We can’t thank Lisa enough for this out of this world gift she has given the community.

January’s volunteer day was a jam packed one – Not only did we have a brilliant turnout for Kingfisher Club, but we also had an army of volunteers for our partnership litter-pick with Ribble Rivers Trust and West Lancashire Borough Council Parks & Countryside Ranger Service. The Kingfisher Club got to work creating anti-litter posters and painted pebbles. They did a fabulous job. Check out the pictures below.

February’s volunteer day was welcomed by a warm winters sun and clear blue skies, as our helpers got to work on path maintenance with Ranger Ben between Summer Street and the BMX Track, whilst another group maintained Klargester treatment flower garden soakaway.

And that’s your lot. We are bang up to date on all things Friends of Tawd Valley and Tawd Valley Park. Please head to our volunteer page, if you would like to join in on the action. You will be made very welcome. Anyway, check back soon for more valley news.
